Measure a client's space

Learn how to make accurate measurements and create floorplans in the Room Planner app.

Tools:

  • Metal tape meter / Laser meter

  • Room Planner App

How to make accurate measurements

  • Be sure your metal tape measure is at least 25-50 ft or 5-10 m. The measurement will be more accurate when two can hold the tape straight.

  • Measure the height and width of each wall in the room. And then measure from one corner to the opposite corner to confirm the room is square or has crooked angles.

  • Measure your windows, doors and how high the windows are from the floor.

  • Note the location of each electrical outlet.

  • Note the location of wall studs. You can pick up an inexpensive stud finder at your local hardware store. You will need to know the location when you hang art or mirrors.

Additional instruments

Room Planner has a AI measurement function. You can use it in a case if you don’t need the accurate measurements. En example, for room decoration purpose.

Click Measure Room with Camera in the Home menu. You can also click Start from an empty room - Measure Room with Camera.

Room Planner measurements

Open Room planner and create Floor Plan from scratch. You can measure the space and draw all the elements real time. Click Start from ab empty room - Draw Walls From Scratch or one of the room shapes in the Home menu.

  • Measurement accuracy should be 0.5 cm. So before to start you need to set your unit system. Click to Centimeters in Units and pick Custom in Millimeters

  • Measure the perimeter of the room and walls thickness, especially for load-bearing walls. Draw walls in your floor plan.

  • Measure the wall height and set it in the room settings

  • Measure height, length and thickness of windows and doors and set the parametres in Room Planner

  • Measure the constructions: beams, ledges, columns, etc.
    You can find it in the catalog. Add constructions, click it and set the exact size.

  • Measure an engineering items: pipes, ventilation holes, risers, etc

  • Measure positions and sizes of radiators, water heater

  • Measure electricity items position: lightning, outlets, switches, signaling and fire system, metering devices, fuse box, etc

  • If there is an oriel in the room, you must measure the following dimensions through auxiliary lines

  • Check the dimensions of the room using the Space Planner ruler in 2D mode

  • Take a photos of all the walls, corners, windows, doors, constructions in your space before the renovation

Work with a ready-made floorplan

If you have ready-made floorplan you can add it to the app as well. Watch the video to learn how to add it.
